Jeffrey Sachs just made a startling claim: He’s “99% sure” that COVID-19 didn’t originate in China — but rather from a laboratory in North Carolina.
For years, anyone who questioned the official Wuhan-origin story was dismissed as a conspiracy theorist. Now, one of the world’s leading economists is directing serious allegations at the University of North Carolina, suggesting it may have conducted risky gain-of-function research — with U.S. government funding — that led to the virus’s creation.
At the same time, President Trump has signed an executive order banning gain-of-function research in… China.
But if the virus originated from a lab on U.S. soil, what difference does that make?
About Jeffrey Sachs: Jeffrey Sachs is an American economist and public policy expert, currently a professor at Columbia University. He previously served as the director of The Earth Institute at the university. His work focuses on sustainable development and economic growth, making him a prominent figure in these fields.
