This meal is filled with incredible flavor!
Bratwurst is one of the most popular type of German sausage made from a blend of beef, veal and pork. The name is derived from the 14th century Old High German Brätwurst, meaning finely chopped sausage meat. It was first invented in the 1300s in Nuremberg. In modern German it is often associated with the verb braten, which means pan frying or roasting. Bratwurst is often served with sauerkraut or potato salad on the side.
There are many kinds of bratwurst typical to the many different regions of Germany. Wikipedia has a quite complete list of the different types of bratwurst (ingredients and the way of preparation/cooking) which you may want to check out at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bratwurst
A Bit About Fennel
Fennel, with its distinct anise-like flavor, has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. Believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region, fennel has been used in culinary and medicinal practices since ancient times.
In ancient Greece and Rome, fennel was highly revered for its various uses. Today, fennel continues to be a popular ingredient in many cuisines around the world. Its unique flavor adds depth to dishes, and its versatility allows it to be used in both savory and sweet preparations.
Throughout history, fennel was not only enjoyed as a food but also used for its medicinal properties. It was believed to aid digestion, soothe stomach ailments, and even improve eyesight. Fennel was also associated with longevity, courage, and strength. In fact, ancient warriors would consume fennel to boost their stamina and endurance before going into battle.
Well next week we will enjoy fennel along with bratwurst as we celebrate the harvest season in October.
