Next Week: A Truly Historic Lamb Kabob from Turkey: The Delicious "Ali Nazik"

Updated: Jul 1, 2022

Ali Nazik is one of the most famous kabob varieties from the south eastern part of Turkey. This delicious meal is native to the ancient city of Gaziantep.

Gaziantep (also known as Antep) is a historic city with narrow streets, enclosed bazaars and a centuries old citadel. The city is famous for its wealth of spices and cuisine which is recognized on the UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for Gastronomy. The city is also the host of first culinary museum in Turkey which is dedicated to Gaziantep cuisine, cookery and eating etiquette!

Eggplant Preparation is an Art in Antep!

Ali Nazik is prepared with on open fire smoked eggplant (a kind of babaganush), and lamb meat. This delicious combination is typically served with a piece of lavash bread and garlicky yogurt on the side.

The history of this delicious meal dates back to the 16th Century Ottoman Empire when the Sultan of the time Yavuz Sultan Selim tastes this dish and names it ‘Eli Nazik’ (skilled hand) honoring the cook. With time, the name turns into "Ali Nazik" (Polite Ali).

Chef Janine's perfectly ketogenic version of "Ali Nazik" is as authentic as it gets.
